Hi, I have a white oak tree in my shady backyard that I had the top cut off in order to bring in more sun. I was hoping it would continue to grow, but unfortunately, it's dying or dead. It's about 12ft tall and I don't want to remove it because it holds up a hammock. I would like to paint it --like a toedom pole or something. I have no idea what kind of paint to use. Can you tell me what would work? I also have another oak that is dying from a fungus. The bark is starting to peal off. I would like to extend it's life as much as possible. Should I paint the tree in the place where the bark has come off? It's only one spot so far.
THANK YOU!! Polly

Thanks Lynda, that's a fantastic tip! I guess it would also work for all kinds of other fruit, as long as they are large enough. I'm glad you found this article helpful too. I think it's becoming increasingly important to grow as much of our own food as possible, and fruit and nut trees are so easy because they keep producing for years with very little intervention after the initial investment in time and effort to establish them.

I had to leave my fig tree behind when I moved house 2 years ago but have just got the new garden into shape and can plant another. Trouble is, it's an incredibly small plot and although I dearly wanted a fig again, having one that grew to 5 metres tall was not an option. Having found this site and read how easy it is to espallier a fig, I am now happily contemplating a new tree along the fenceline. Many thanks.

By the way, I gad a small tree originally, only about 20 fruits on it and I used to tie the foot of a stocking or pantyhose over the small green figs when they appeared, to stop the birds getting to them before I did.

Leave enough room for the figs to grow and tie loosely. I reckon with a larger tree which has more fruit, you can afford to share with the birds :)

This tip might help other gardeners.

Tickle Me Plant is the coolest gift for a child.
The leaves instantly close up and the branches fall down when you Tickle It! I remember these from the Caribbean, now they made it easy to grow indoors year round. This will bring a bit of nature and the islands into your home. My students can't stop tickling them! Love the party favors

I have many ferns in the garden and they have rolled themselves into small packages at the tip ot the leaves. All the ferns on the underside have reddish small bugs? and they are simply not healthy - what should I do and what is causing this?
